Japanese name 猿神
Romanized name Sarugami
Meaning Monkey god
Type Animal form/Kami

Sarugami (猿神 or さるがみ, Sarugami) is both a yokai and a deity in Japanese folklore.

The former hails from a story of a town that sacrificed young women to a giant monkey, later revealed to be a yokai posing as a deity. A visiting hunter substituted himself and his dogs for one particular sacrifice, a girl that he loved. After the switch was revealed, a battle between the sarugami, its comrades and the hunter ensued. Eventually, only deer and boars were offered as sacrifices. Another variation has dogs being trained to hunt sarugami.
